The Cape York meteorite is named after the location of its discovery in Savissivik, Greenland, and is one of the world's largest metallic meteorites.
The meteorite collided with Earth nearly 10,000 years ago. The iron masses were known by the Inuit and were used by them for centuries as a source of metal for tools and harpoons.
In 1963, Vagn F. Buchwald discovered an important specimen of Cape York meteorite on the peninsula of Agpalilik. The Agpalilik meteorite, also known as 'the man', weighs about 20 metric tons and is currently on display at the geological Museum of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The specimen that we are offering in this lot comes from that meteorite.
This slice is really spectacular, cut in rectangular shape. You can see the Widmanstätten pattern with great detail and definition. The internal structure of this meteorite is ‘medium octahedrite’.
