Two uniform dark-green cloth bindings with rich gilt stamping. Top edge gilt - 483+461 pp. - 20.5 × 14 cm.
Condition: Both volumes are from Hofstra University Library, Hempstead, New York, with the following characteristics: stickers on the spines (cloth of volume II slightly damaged), stamps on the fore and bottom edges, endpapers glued to the insides of the front and back covers. With 49 of 50 photogravures (frontispiece ‘Nevsky Prospekt’ in volume I is missing).
Otherwise good and clean, the books are well preserved.
Théophile Gautier (1811–1872) was a French writer. He started as a Romantic writer and was an active militant, but later he turned away from the movement because he did not agree with the excesses that Romanticism had led to. Gautier then developed into a theorist of the Parnasse movement and defended the “L'art pour l'art” doctrine. He wrote both prose and poetry, but is now best known for his poems.
