In the early 1920s the BBÖ had electric locomotives for the mountainous route on the Arlbergbahn which could be used as express train. The ÖBB decided to build a locomotive with rod drive after Swiss example of the construction series Ce 6/8 II and commissioned the building of the BBÖ Rh 1100. For the drive was chosen for a single connecting rod, that powered both the blind shaft and the driving wheels. In total the loc had 4 of these connecting rods. The first 7 locomotives were built by BBC and Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf, where BBC supplied the electrical installation and Floridsdorf built the mechanical part. The locomotives were delivered in 1923 and 1924 to the BBÖ. There followed a 2nd order of 9 locomotives that had a bit more power. These were delivered in 1926 and 1927 and were classified as BBÖ reihe 1100.1. The locomotives were stationed in Innsbruck and later also in Salzburg.
In 1938 the locomotives came into the possession of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, which classified the locomotives as series E 89 and E 89.1. During the 2nd World War 2 locomotives were heavily damaged. After the 2nd World War, the locomotives at the ÖBB were classified as series Rh 1089 and Rh 1189. Also the locomotive 1100.01 that during the 2nd World War was heavily damaged, was repaired and got the company number 1089.01
In 1979 the last locomotive of this series was put aside.
