This map was included in the first world atlas, namely the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius, which was the French edition of 1587 and shows the modern-day Benelux. The north is at the top right; the west is at the top left. On the bottom left is the scale that indicates the length of the large, average and small German miles. Centre, far left: Paris is only just visible, and top centre shows a sea monster and at the top are two angels who are carrying the map’s name plate. Dover in England is only just visible in the upper left corner.
All in all, a wonderful old coloured image of the Benelux.
