Three volumes in one binding:
-Historiae naturalis de avibus (1657). 160 pp. Title engraving and 62 illustrations.
-Historiae Naturalis de insectis (1657). 147 pp. Title engraving and 28 illustrations.
-historiae naturalis de serpentibis (1665). 37 pp. Title page and 12 illustrations.
Leather binding, 38 x 24 cm.
In bad condition. The binding is damaged on the spine and the cover edges. The leather of the spine is partly missing. Sturdy book block. A water stain at the bottom left throughout the book. Many pages with smaller to larger tears or with repairs. Though most of the tears don’t touch the illustrations.
Three complete works in one binding. Jonston’s work also includes the ‘Historiae naturalis de quadrupedibus’, the ‘Piscibus et cetis’ and the ‘Exanguibus Aquaticis’. The bird illustrations in this book are after Aldrovandi.
John Johnston of Johannes Jonstonus (1603-1675) was a Polish physicist. He studied and teached in Leiden, Frankfurt and Cambridge.
