Despite being one of the most common fossils in the world, an ammonite such as this one is of extreme rarity: it is worth nothing for its impressive dimensions (34 cm in diameter) but especially for the beauty of its fossilisation.
The pyritisation of the animal tissues requires several concurrent conditions: the initial process of decomposition by anaerobic bacteria produces an amount of sulphur, whose subsequent reaction with ferrous materials produces ferrous sulfide, which is necessary for the process of oxidation by aerobic bacteria to get to the final pyritisation of the soft parts of the body.
The beauty of this dissected ammonite is also in the exceptional combination - extremely elegant - between the gold colour of the pyrite and the black background, less common than the brown tones to which we are more commonly used to.
