Madagascar
The black ammonite is the fossil of an extinct mollusc of the Cephalopod species. The fossils discovered date back to a period between the Denovian (400 million years ago) to the mass extinction occurred in the Cretaceous–Paleogene (66 million years ago).
The inner shape of the fossil is a spiral with various chambers growing from the centre; these were connected by a small pipe that passed through it and that the animal used for filling and emptying the chambers with water in order to climb up and down into the sea. The body of the animal lived only in the final chamber.
In this case, we find two fossilised ammonites in a single piece forming a beautiful composition; moreover, the black colour, rarer than the brown, gives it a touch of rarity to the piece.
