The ammolite is an extraordinary organic stone, with spectacular reflections, especially of orange and green colour.
Originating from fossils of ammonites, they preserved their thin layer of aragonite, material that also compose the mother of pearl, that gives this beautiful glossy iridescence.
This feature is sometimes confused with adularescence, based on different mechanisms: the iridescence of ammolite is an external reflection on a layer of aragonite, whereas the adularescence occurs on lamellar layers inside the stone.
