Large, hand carved wooden statue depicting Hanuman (monkey warrior of Rama) and the snake Naga in a delicate, graceful style. From Indonesia, Bali.
Hanuman is the monkey warrior of the god Rama. Hanuman means "broken jaw". He was the most loyal servant of Rama and was also his personal guard. Statues of Hanuman are used to protect homes. In the Hindu pantheon, Hanuman is the deity that helped god Rama rescue his wife Sita from the hands of the demon king Ravana, king of the Rakshasas.
Very detailed and finely crafted, with a fine eye for correct proportions and movement. Amongst others, this can be seen in the fine lines, of which the statue has many.
